Born 1970
Hanne Schmidt is a practicing visual artist living and working in Herning, Denmark. She made her debut at Kunstnernes Sommerudstilling (KS) in 2012 and has since been accepted into several juried exhibitions, most recently KS 2021. She has continuously developed her artistic practice through studies at Aarhus Kunstakademi, various art centered folk high schools, and a Masterclass at Herning Billedskole. In addition, she is a member of BKF and KKS.
“Hanne Schmidt is entirely and unequivocally herself. The colour palette can be subdued and earthy, yet her paintings always contain larger or smaller passages of bright, sparkling colours. Where Hammershøi worked according to classical rules of perspective, Hanne Schmidt breaks with this, creating images in which the perspective tilts, so that the composition becomes surrealistically unbalanced, almost making the viewer dizzy.
In the same way, she demonstrates a contemporary sensibility by creating elements in the painting that are completely flat and two-dimensional, thereby taking on an abstract function within an otherwise figurative painting: a red rectangle on a staircase, yellow and red extended drawers, the grooves of a radiator, and the undulating arabesques on floor tiles and ceiling decorations, which are entirely in the Art Nouveau style.
The reason Hanne Schmidt’s paintings feel so dynamic and full of tension is connected to her use of formal contrasts: between the figurative and the abstract, the thinly painted and the thick impasto, between empty spaces and accumulations of objects, between earthy tones and glowing colours, and between ‘normal’ perspective and skewed, surreal displacements. Achieving this strong dynamism without everything becoming confusing or diffuse requires precision and mastery as a painter. Hanne Schmidt has that. That is why it is such a pleasure to observe her painted spaces, which are at once harmonious and charged with tension.”
