Thomas Andersson (DK)
Born 1957
Thomas Andersson started his art education at Grafisk Skole in Aarhus, and then continued at Det Jyske Kunstakademi – years he still remembers with fondness. Andersson’s work combines two directions: a classical tradition of sculptures cast in bronze and a use of found objects, as his works often incorporate discarded pieces of machinery, nails, exposed wire, etc. Most of his works are to some extent figurative – be it animals or people – but they are far from realistic. The artist himself says: “while [my sculptures] might resemble something, they surely are not anatomically correct. One might say they are sculpturally correct – from my point of view at least.”
“Thomas Andersson is one of those people who can bear to be alone. When given the choice, rather than Paris he chose Canadian wilderness. This also shows in his working methods and his choice of materials. Instead of trying to conquer the nature, through his steady work he starts a dialogue with it. The content of his works matters more than their form, but over the months and years a number of figures have found their way into his works again and again. While large arrangements and pretentious postures remain rare, there is a good portion of humour and abundance of elusive fragments of lyrical images – the naked and vulnerable man. His sculptures hit our sensitive spots, and often take on problematic issues; problematic because we can recognize ourselves in them. They mirror the merciless reality. However, at the same time, one can observe a play with materials and expressions; a joy in visualizing things with small variations in what is almost a minimalist approach. It is the trained eye and the intricate fantasy, which are thus expressed.”
