Edvardas Racevicius (LT)

Edvardas Racevicius’ work is rooted in his Lithuanian heritage, namely the archetypal relationship between a man and a tree. Racevicius reflects on the old Baltic belief that souls were reincarnated as trees, and through his art he finds these hidden, trapped souls and reveals them for the world to see. According to Racevicius, trees carry an echo of the Western culture, and through his works he shows his belief; that the wonderful European culture and its vitality springs from the ground. Everything is a fragment conjuring up a bigger interconnected whole; the pedestal is directly connected to the figure, the figure merges with the tree and the tree is one with the ground.

“Some of my sculptural projects are inspired by the plant world – it fascinates me and influences my artistic work to observe the plants during their growth, to see how both their individual parts and their overall form change. In my sculptures I try to implement not only organic forms, but also the principle of change: A sculpture that consists of several parts, a sculpture that can be at any time re-arranged.”
