“Photographer by passion and profession. Time is divided between personal work and commercial reportage and portraits for industry and magazines. My inspiration arises from a fountainhead of classic medieval painting and ideas often surface while jogging in the forest or during another of my favorites: winter viking swimming in the salty bay.”
Bent Nielsen has throughout a great part of his life and career been working with photography. He has among other things been co-owner of CAT-productions, worked as a photographer for Grundfoss and as freelance photographer.
Nielsen’s latest photographs, which are exhibited at Galleri V58, revolve around his passion for winter swimming. In the photo book “Himmel, hav og horisont” (Sky, ocean and horizon), which was published in December 2019, Nielsen collects his photographic experiences from the Viking svim club “Jormsborg”, situated at “Den Permanente” beach in Aarhus.
The photographs, in the book and at the gallery, display the beautiful line where sky, ocean and horizon meet in red, blue, white, green and grey colors. The pictures are taken from the same spot at the winter swimming club and show how diverse ocean and sky can be according to time and season. Small, evocative quotes overheard in the club, outside and in the sauna, are attached to the pictures in the book:
”A: Can you tell me the time? B: Well yeah, but when I enter the door at the club I leave the entire world’s stress outside – so in here I really don’t look at the clock.”
In ”Himmel, hav og horisont” the visual aspects and the language enter into an amazing symbiosis; as a beholder you get the feeling of being right there on the wooden pier in the icy cold or in the heat of the sauna stones.
The photographs present the ocean and sky in all their unpredictable ways and one is instantly drawn by the spectacular nature depictions.
